Scientists claim that the laws of nature are about to change, and same-sex couples could soon be able to produce biological children. A joint team of researchers from Cambridge University and Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science have apparently found a way to create human egg or sperm cells from an individual’s stem cells.
Using Stem cells harvested from five different people, the scientists engineered sperm cells and checked their qualities against aborted fetuses. They found that the cells were viable and healthy.
“We have succeeded in the first and most important step of this process,” said Azim Surani, professor of physiology and reproduction at Cambridge. “We can make these very early human stem cells in a dish.”
“It has already caused interest from gay groups because of the possibility of making egg and sperm cells from parents of the same sex,” added the head of Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science, Jacob Hanna.
We might see further advancement of the process in the coming years, revolutionizing fertility science and technology, as well as changing scientific and philosophical concepts of reproduction, which until today has been limited to two people of the opposite sex.
